Dave was a proud Dewey Beach homeowner who passed away suddenly of an undiagnosed cardiac arrhythmia just before his 29th birthday. His compassion for others and his desire to live life to the fullest made a lasting impression on everyone he met. His family and friends would like to create a means to spread awareness about the risks of irregular heartbeat, support the DE beach community by providing defibrillator machines and associated training, and hands only CPR education to community organizations and small businesses. In addition, we have reached out to Cape Henlopen High School to organize a heart screening event for youth athletes.
Last year’s donations, sponsorships and race proceeds were earmarked for the Dewey Beach Beautification Project. A land parcel located on the bay side of Bellevue St. (across from Dave’s home) was chosen as the location of a paved sitting area that will include a park bench, information about cardiac arrhythmia and a memorial plaque. The plans are to have this completed by this year’s race so that everyone can visit.
