My name is Kalyn Nix and I am a senior in high school. I have been in Girl Scouts for over 10 years, and am now pursuing my Gold Award. What’s that you may ask, well, it is the highest achievement within Girl Scouts that requires a 80-100 hour service project that will make a lasting impact on a community issue. After thinking about what was important to me and how I could make a difference, I came to the conclusion that I wanted to fight the stigma associated with IDD’s (intellectual and developmental disabilities).

For the past 4 years I have been involved with an organization called Best Buddies. At my school, we plan and participate in events for children with IDD”s at a local center. It always disturbs me when I hear people use the R-word (retarded) to describe something or someone they think is “slow” or “stupid”, because it is an offensive slur against those with IDD’s. At first it was difficult for me to correct my friends and peers when they used the R-word, but now that I have the confidence, I want to educate my entire community. Too many people are unaware of how hurtful the term retarded is, so I began planning an awareness 5K to end the circle of hate and ignorance.

The goal of my 5K is to educate teens and their families on the hurtful nature of the R-word(retarded), to advocate for the equal treatment and respect of those with IDD’s (intellectual and developmental disabilities), and to introduce local schools to programs like Best Buddies. The name of my race is: Race to Get Rid of the R-word, because the goal is to end the use of the R-word in delaware. My motto, and one I hope you will also adopt, is that Delaware needs to #GetRIDD . AKA: Respect for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
